P. Kougar-Melton Presenter SWHS K206Meeting Overview:
Lora Ringler_Showed Student Work using iDVD (excellent presentation
By Lora, the amount of planning and effort in learning the apps quickly, so
she
could keep all her students focused, was obvious.) Thank you, Lora!
Pat and others commented on the fact that you have to be bold and persistent
In using iWorks as it sometimes take a couple of tries to get the options and
effects to work. Also, have your students save often.

SBISD TA USERS GROUP MEETING September 10, 2009
"Dongles" and adapters were issued by Sheri Alford to those teachers that were still in need. If you have not received your adapters, e-mail Sheri. Those of you that picked up the iMac dongles by mistake need to return them as soon as possible as there are iMac Lab teachers that are waiting for these adapters.
A reminder; _you need to send in a listing of your computers if you want to make use of the Apple Remote Desktop.
The main meeting discussion centered on Multimedia and Video Lessons for the fall term.
A number of Middle School Teachers e-mailed questions on lessons and applications tips. Hopefully my e-mail responses were helpful enough until we meet again in October and can discuss them in depth.
Sheri provided suggestions on budgeting for the year along with an overview of the current situation with our new labs. Everyone seemed well pleased with the new equipment.
The Apple Handout Resources are all being posted to the PTL Web Site. You can also find many listed at www.kougarmedia.com >SBISD under Apple Resources from Workshop. Also don't forget that the Adobe Curriculum Resources along with Adobe TV for Educators are very helpful in planning your lessons.
The meeting was closed at 5 pm but several of us stayed on to talk over the opening events of this special school year.
Thanks to all of you that called and e-mailed ahead of the meeting
Don't forget our Book Study. Go to the Pink web site for suggestions and comments on what to look for as your read

Scope and Sequence for SBISD Secondary Technology Application Courses 2008-09
Multi Media: PDF file 6 wks T 1-2
Web Mastering: PDF file 9 wks T 1-2
Scope and Sequence for Secondary Technology Application Courses in Spring Branch ISD:
- Digital Graphics and Animation
- Multi-Media
- Web Mastery
- Video Technology / Advanced Technology Applications
It is important that we develop Technology Application Courses with Concepts that show students how to understand and transfer knowledge. Our curriculum should teach students how to use the computer effectively, to use applications creatively and productively, to troubleshoot hardware and software and to transfer the skills they have learned to new technologies.
This is particularly important for today's student, as most of what they will need to understand will be based on a applications that interface together, such as the Adobe Creative Suite Premium and web 2.0 tools.
There are many great resources that are out there for teachers: These resources along with the vast teaching and production experience that all of us bring today should make for easy solutions to creating a Standards Based Secondary TA Curriculum Guide

THIS WE KNOW: __ We are imaginative teachers _ By being upbeat, innovative, and as creative as our students we can do great things with the tools at hand.
To be sure, in schools across the nation, many
children and teachers are experimenting with
digital media. Some are taking advantage of
digital media to imagine, invent, or develop
what-if scenarios. Learning from students, some
teachers are encouraging multimedia authoring
projects, but in a teacher survey published in
2005, only one-fifth said that they considered
multimedia authoring programs to be essential
for teaching in their classrooms (National Center
for Education Statistics, 2005).
Those teachers who do encourage students to
invent together meet steep obstacles. These
include technological challenges (inadequate
equipment and technical support); organizational
issues (few opportunities for teachers to become
more fluent with digital media); and pedagogical
impediments (standards and assessments that
undervalue invention and leave little class time
for experimentation).
Find wholeness in a “remix” world!
Today’s children are using multiple applications
and platforms, often at the same time. They are
becoming adept at cutting and pasting not only
texts but also ideas, images, musical compositions,
literary works, video clips, and other content. Many
are learning the art of mash-up — a hip-hop
music term that describes the process of mixing
data from two or more sources into an integrated
experience. With digital tools, users take things
apart and put them together in new, ever more
ingenious ways. Web 2.0 applications encourage
them to alter encyclopedia entries, remix stories
or novels into new multimedia forms, and
reassemble elements of other people’s designs
into new creations.
“Kids are drawn by striking visual images, color,
and action — they certainly are part of the appeal
of digital media. But what kids are always trying to
do is make meaning of the action. Kids are always
looking for a storyline. The most compelling digital
media are built around stories.” Ellen Meier
